Backup Small Business Server 2011 or Server 2008 can’t add disk

When you attempt to add a backup drive to an existing backup rotation in SBS(Small Business Server) 2011 you may receive an error like the following;


In Server 2008 r2 you will receive the following error;

In order to solve this error perform the following steps

1.  Open an administrative Command Prompt

2.  Run the following commands from an administrative command prompt.

  • wbadmin get disks

You will get a report of all disks in the system, including you boot disks, look for the disk that represents the new disk in the disk name

Disk name: xxxxxxxxxxx
Disk number: x
Disk identifier: {xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}
Total space: xxx.xx GB
Used space : xxx.xx GB


  • Copy the value for “Disk Identifier” in the results and use it in the following command in place of the {xxx….. for the new disk
  • WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP -addtarget:{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}
  • Answer  Y to the two questions that are asked provided that you are sure you have the correct disk identifier for the new backup destination.



the file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect;  Cannot configure backup schedule; backup error, windows server backup
